Claudia Sheinbaum, the president-elect of Mexico, announced today during a press conference that Martí Batres, the current head of government of Mexico City, will assume the position of General Director of the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) during her administration.
"He will be the director of ISSSTE, and what I've asked of him is to help coordinate FOVISSSTE. Both are related to the social security system for state workers. The president has made significant progress, but ISSSTE is the institution that suffered the most deterioration and neglect during the neoliberal period," said the president-elect.

Following his appointment as General Director of ISSSTE, Martí Batres stated that he would focus on providing efficient social security services to ensure the well-being of state workers.
"We will fulfill all the tasks assigned to us. This involves building the pillars of a state that supports health, housing, and social security. Among these tasks, it is crucial to continue the nationalization of ISSSTE," Batres affirmed.
He explained that during his administration at ISSSTE, his priority would be nationalizing the institute and ensuring that its services were not outsourced.
"All services were outsourced even within a public institution. We will continue working to serve ISSSTE beneficiaries as our philosophy dictates and as the function of ISSSTE, which is an institution serving the state, requires," he added.
Working towards a unified national system
Claudia Sheinbaum further stated that the country needs to work towards achieving a unified public health system while maintaining the existing institutions, and this will be done in collaboration with Martí Batres.
"What we want is for any Mexican to be able to access healthcare institutions and receive care without being told they are not beneficiaries," said the president-elect.
Martí Batres has been the head of government of Mexico City since June 2023. He holds a bachelor's degree in law, a master's degree in Social Work, and a PhD in Latin American Studies from UNAM.
He served as Secretary of the Government of Mexico City from July 2021 to June 2023 and as a Senator for the same entity from 2018 to 2021. Previously, he held various positions within the MORENA party and has extensive experience in local public administration.
