Mexico’s President-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, appointed Tatiana Clouthier on Tuesday as the head of the decentralized body within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs responsible for maintaining close communication with Mexican communities abroad and strengthening their ties with the homeland.
Upon announcing her appointment, Sheinbaum emphasized that Clouthier will maintain close communication with communities in the United States, given that she resides in Nuevo León.
"We discussed this role together; we hold each other in high regard. In gratitude for all she has done for the Movement, she is well-versed in this area and will bring the proximity of Nuevo León to all matters concerning the care of Mexicans abroad, particularly in the United States," Sheinbaum added.
Sheinbaum also highlighted that a comprehensive strategy is being developed to support Mexicans abroad in collaboration with the incoming Foreign Minister, Juan Ramón de la Fuente.
“The idea is for Juan Ramón de la Fuente to personally address issues related to consulates, particularly in the United States and Canada,” she said, adding that efforts will be made to streamline the processes for Mexicans using these consular services through the Agency for Digital Transformation.
"We will ensure that the civil registries of various states can communicate with consulates to assist migrants. The next Foreign Minister is already working on such issues," she said.
It is worth noting that on August 14, in adherence to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's feminist foreign policy, a decree was published changing the name of the Institute to include Mexican women, now known as the Institute for Mexicans Abroad.
Who is Tatiana Clouthier Carrillo?
Tatiana Clouthier Carrillo holds a Master's in Public Administration from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León and a Bachelor's in English from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM).
She studied the Rule of Law at George Washington University, Governance at Harvard University, and Economic and Political Perspectives for Mexico at Harvard University.
Clouthier served as Secretary of the Economy from January 2021 to October 2022 in the current administration and was the campaign coordinator for Mexico’s President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
She has over 12 years of experience as a public servant at the municipal and state levels and has served as a federal deputy twice. Additionally, she has worked in the private sector for nearly ten years and is a partner in a family real estate company.
Clouthier has also lectured at various educational institutions and spoken at international institutes, including the University of California, Berkeley, and the London School of Economics in the United Kingdom.
