The elected government will seek to fully leverage technological advancements to ensure more transparent, secure, and efficient elections, stated José Merino, the digital representative of the upcoming administration.
Merino, former head of the Digital Agency for Public Innovation in the government of Mexico City during Claudia Sheinbaum's administration, emphasized that with the goal of making democratic systems and public technology more accessible, Mexico is heading towards the digitalization of its voting processes by 2030.
“For the next elections to be effective, we need the integration of digital technologies”, he told to El Heraldo de México.
Some of the countries that have established hybrid citizen voting systems (online voting, electronic voting at polling stations, and physical ballots) are Canada, Belgium, the United States, Brazil, Switzerland, France, and India. However, Merino mentioned that for Mexico to reach a level of digital voting, it is first necessary to have the infrastructure, budget, coverage, and use of the telecommunications spectrum in a developed manner.
The expert assured that one of the main guiding principles for the next federal administration will be to improve citizen services via the internet.
