Three individuals are seeking to represent the chilangas and chilangos living abroad in the Congress of Mexico City. They are Manuel Alejandro Robles Gómez, candidate of the Coalition "Let's Keep Making History in Mexico City," composed of the parties Morena, PT, and Verde Ecologista de México; Raúl de Jesús Torres Guerrero, nominated by the Coalition "VA X LA CDMX," composed of PAN, PRI, and PRD; and José Pablo Martínez Villanueva, candidate of the party Movimiento Ciudadano.

To choose the best option, it is necessary to know the candidates and their proposals. Therefore, on April 15, 2024, at 5:00 PM, the Electoral Institute of Mexico City (IECM) will hold a debate for the migrant deputy, which you can follow through their social media channels.

On this occasion, the dialogue will focus on two main themes: "Public policies for migrant care, support services for chilangos abroad, and safe return," as well as "Migration abroad and migration within the country (Attention to migrants from Central and South America)."

The figure of the migrant deputy is recent, initially contemplated in the local Constitution promulgated on May 5, 2017. In June of that same year, the Electoral Code of Mexico City was published in the Official Gazette of Mexico City, where its creation and implementation were regulated to materialize it for the first time in the 2020-2021 electoral process.

The path has not been easy, as in 2020, this political-electoral right of residents of Mexico City living abroad was repealed. However, organizations like Fuerza Migrante challenged the decision until in June of that same year, the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Power of the Federation (TEPJF) reinstated it. The first elected migrant deputy was Raúl Torres (PAN), who took office on September 1, 2021, within the II legislature of the Congress of Mexico City.

The main function of this figure is to represent the residents of Mexico City living abroad in the Congress of Mexico City, to be a link to involve them in the country's decisions and to safeguard their interests and needs.

According to the National Electoral Institute, as of February 25th, residents of Mexico City living abroad comprise the largest registration of voters for this year's elections, totaling 51,805 out of the 226,661 registered individuals. This represents 22% of the total.

Informed voting is important. Don't miss the debate among the three candidates to decide which is the best alternative to represent the Congress of Mexico City.
