June 2 has finally arrived in Mexico, the day when the largest elections in memory will take place, with the election of the president, senators, deputies, governors, mayors, and countless other positions.

To cast your vote, there is a guide released every year by the INE, indicating the correct way to cast a vote, as there are doubts because the names of candidates may appear more than once. Therefore, we explain what can happen if you mark their name more than once.

Valid Vote

If you mark many boxes on the same ballot, there is a way in which your vote will definitely be valid. This is when you mark boxes of political parties that have joined in a coalition and supported the same candidate.

That is, if you mark the boxes for Morena, Partido del Trabajo, and Partido Verde Ecologista de México on the same presidential ballot, your vote will definitely count because they all form part of the Sigamos Haciendo Historia coalition, and their candidate is Claudia Sheinbaum.

Null Vote

But there is also a way to mark many boxes and have your vote not count. This happens when the boxes are for two different coalitions or boxes of parties that are not linked in the election. Then your vote will be definitively annulled during the official count. For example, PAN and Morena; PVEM and PRI, or PT and PRD, etc.

It will also be annulled when you make marks all over the ballot and there is no definitive intention of your vote. For example, when you make drawings, mark the ballot from corner to corner, or write phrases that cover the entire sheet. The suggestion is to mark only one box.
