In recent days, the National Electoral Institute (INE) notified by email 39,724 individuals that their registration to vote from abroad in Mexico's electoral process had been denied, following a second review of 42,436 applications due to the increase in registrations from abroad made with voter credentials issued in Mexico.

However, during the morning press conference on Monday, April 22, Chancellor Alicia Bárcena announced that the INE's National Surveillance Commission recommended reinstating 20,964 applications that present inconsistencies to the Electoral Roll of Overseas Voters, so they will be able to vote without any additional procedure.

Meanwhile, for the remaining 18,760 records with irregularities, affected individuals can request clarification from the electoral authority before May 5 through INETEL, at 1 (866) 986 8306 toll-free from the United States or at +52 (55) 5481 9897 from other countries; or by email at voto.extranjero@ine.mx.

Those who cannot submit their clarification request before this date or whose request is denied still retain their right to vote, which they can do from abroad in person at the 23 special polling stations to be set up at consular offices (20 in the United States, 2 in Europe, and 1 in Canada). Remember that there will only be 1500 spaces per consular office and it is necessary to present your voter credential issued in Mexico or abroad.

Another way to exercise your right to vote is in Mexico, as your registration will remain on the national Electoral Roll. On June 2, you can go to the special polling stations or the polling station corresponding to your district and section. For this option, it is necessary to present a voter credential issued in Mexico.

Chancellor Alicia Bárcena highlighted that to date, 14,279 individuals have requested clarification of their registration and emphasized that the organization, planning, and development of the electoral process is the responsibility of the National Electoral Institute, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs facilitates the work and informs the population abroad.

"It is primarily the responsibility of the INE, in fact, on election day, the consulates are at the disposal of the INE, and the staff, including the consul, leave the premises because we do not participate in any way in the process, which is the total responsibility of the INE," commented the Chancellor.

For his part, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador mentioned that although there have been advances in promoting voting from abroad, efforts have not been sufficient.

"There has been very little progress because there are many obstacles, a lot of bureaucracy, now we will see it, there are millions of Mexicans who work and live in the United States and those who have the opportunity to vote are very few. This needs to continue to be addressed going forward, progress is being made from the previous election to this one, but very little and what is being achieved is still facing obstacles and bureaucratic procedures, and that is what we are helping with," said the president during his morning press conference.
